ASHRAE 110:2016 Fume Hood Performance Testing
In-House & On-Site by LabGuard

Our facility is engineered to conduct all tests prescribed under ASHRAE 110:2016, including evaluations for Constant Air Volume (CAV) and Variable Air Volume (VAV) fume hoods.
Every test is performed by trained and certified LabGuard specialists, ensuring precise measurements, repeatable results, and complete transparency. Clients are encouraged to witness the testing live, either at our factory or at their site.
Why ASHRAE 110 Testing Matters
ASHRAE 110 is the global benchmark for assessing the containment performance, airflow stability, and operator safety of laboratory fume hoods.
Regular testing ensures:
- Safe operation under real-world conditions
- Compliance with global safety standards
- Early identification of airflow instability, turbulence, or design issues
- Validation of VAV system response and control accuracy
- Confidence for EHS and engineering teams before lab commissioning
Comprehensive ASHRAE 110:2016 Tests Conducted by LabGuard
Face Velocity & Cross-Draft Testing
We measure:
- Average face velocity across the working aperture
- Point-by-point grid measurements
- Effects of room air currents and cross drafts
- Impact of sash height changes on airflow stability
This helps evaluate whether the hood maintains consistent capture performance under normal room conditions.
VAV Response & Stability Tests
For VAV fume hoods, we assess:
- Dynamic sash movement response time
- Airflow stabilization time
- Overshoot/undershoot behaviour
- Controller accuracy and repeatability
These tests determine if the VAV system can maintain safe airflow levels during real operational use.
Local & Large-Volume Visualization (Smoke) Tests
We perform both:
- Local Visualization Challenge Test
- Large Volume Visualization Test
Using visible, non-toxic smoke, our engineers visualize:
- Airflow patterns inside the hood
- Areas of turbulence or backflow
- Leakage at edges and corners
- Overall containment behaviour
This provides an immediate visual representation of hood safety.
Tracer Gas (SF₆) Containment Test
The SF₆ Tracer Gas Test is the most critical and globally recognized indicator of fume hood performance.
We measure:
- Containment leakage at various sash positions
- Operator breathing zone concentration
- Hood robustness during disturbances
- Pass/fail results as per ASHRAE criteria
LabGuard’s SF₆ test setup uses high-precision analytical instruments to ensure accurate readings down to trace levels.
On-Site Testing & Certification
